A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

About

You are in command of a ship of the Terran Ally Coalition fighting a battle against the mysterious Civilization Of Malice. Do what you can, Commander, to cripple or destroy the COM ship and bring TAC to victory!

Protect your Bridge and Engineering

In TacCom, your ship is comprised of multiple components such as your Bridge, Engineering, Sensors, Propulsion, Maneuvering Thrusters, and Ion Lance. The first two of these components are the most important. If either your Bridge or Engineering are destroyed, you ship will be crippled and considered destroyed.

Message from Author

TacCom is far from polished. There may be many bugs I was unable to remove. While the game is playable, how the game determines damage may not be obvious and victory (or defeat) may appear sudden. I do hope you enjoy the game for what it is, however, and thank you for playing!

Controls

  • The Options button on the main menu does nothing. Sorry. Forgot to remove before I had to submit.
  • You can enter "cursor" mode by pressing the tilde (~) key on your keyboard, and exit it by pressing escape.
  • When in "cursor" mode, you can navigate the map with..
    • W - Up
    • S - Down
    • Q - Left Up
    • A - Left Down
    • E - Right Up
    • D - Right Down
  • You bring up your ship's interface with the "W" key
  • Each ship component can be accessed by pressing the "<" and ">" buttons on either side of the ship interface.
  • The top of the ship interface shows the three ship compartments (from left to right: aft, mid, fore). The one highlighted in yellow is the compartment the currently selected component is attached to.
  • If either you Command or Engineering component is destroyed, your ship will be crippled and you will loose.
  • Pressing this symbol will command your ship to engage forward thrusters. The first number is how many cells you will move. The second is how many turns until you move.
  • Pressing the Maneuvering engines will bring up a cursor. Select a cell in the direction you wish to turn, then press "Enter" or "Space" on your keyboard. You can cancel the maneuver by pressing "escape" or by selecting a cell directly ahead of your ship.
  • Pressing the Ion Lance will bring up a cursor. Select your target and press "Enter" or "Space" on the keyboard. You can cancel the Ion Lance by pressing "escape" or by selecting an empty cell.
  • Pressing the Sensors will enable your long-range view for a turn.
  • After making your commands, press the "E" button on the top right of the ship interface to end your turn.

Unfortunately the Linux build seems to be a Windows build running in WINE.

I can assure you, the Linux build is most assuredly a Linux build. I do my work on Linux and that is the first build I run.

I test the Windows build (which is it’s own, independent build) via WINE.

Is there an error you are encountering?

I will admit that, as a game written for a jam, TacCom was not as fully tested as I would have liked, but I know that, at least as far as the machines I’ve tested, the Linux and Windows builds run.

I have installed it via the itch client and there the game was launched under WINE. So maybe it’s just a packaging issue of sorts.

I have no idea about how the itch.io client works, as I only use the website. On the website, there is a Linux exclusive download (which is in .tar.gz format) and a Windows exclusive download (in .zip format). Perhaps the itch.io client only handles .zip filetypes? (I’m pulling that out my backside).

I just downloaded the Linux download and double checked… it is definitely the Linux build.

I just tried again. At least the client has the Windows-Version pre-selected for some reason. Now I selected the Linux version and it works. Must have missed that yesterday, sorry for the fuss. Not quite sure how to tell it to offer up the Linux version. Pretty sure it works correctly through Butler but not sure how it works with manual uploads.

No worries! I thank you for the heads up regardless :D
