Picture, if you will, if Pac-Man and Crazy Taxi were smooshed together into a game that had the development time equal to the average life span of a fruit fly. Then, picture said game development lost about a third of that development time due to a poor initial game idea and the loss of a day to a holiday!

In Pac-Taxi you drive around what looks like a Pac-Man-ish maze, picking up passengers (for some reason) and delivering them to their destinations, all while avoiding the maze creepers. Wait... Creepers? Not Ghosts? ... NO! Stop asking questions and get those passengers! Your gamer cred is counting on it!

This game was developed for the Godot Wild Jam #80, using the Godot Game Engine v4.4.1.

How to Play

As one of the challenges in the Game Jam was to not use any text... there are no explicit instructions in Pac-Taxi. Am I using this as an excuse not to spend the time adding those instructions in a clever way? I can't say...

What I will say is, here are the instructions...

Car Controls

KeyboardGamepad
Acceleration
WRight Trigger
BrakingSLeft Trigger
Turn LeftAL-Stick Left
Turn RightDL-Stick Right
Toggle ReverseQLeft Bumper
Honk HornEL3 (Press L-Stick)

Finding Passengers

Any available passenger on the map, not currently on screen, will have an orange arrow pointing to them on the edge of the screen. Follow the arrows.

Picking Up Passengers

Bring the car to a complete stop inside the pickup zone, then honk the horn. The passenger should then make their way to the car. The car will automatically pick the passenger up when in range. **NOTE:** If the car starts moving before the passenger is picked up, the car *WILL NOT* pick the passenger up.

You can only pick up a maximum of 3 passengers before some need to be dropped off.

Finding Drop-off Zones

All dropoff zones for passengers already in your car, not already on the screen, will have a blue arror pointing to them on the edge of the screen. Follow the arrows.

Dropping Passengers Off

Bring the car to a stop within the dropoff zone. The passenger will automatically exit and deposit money into your account.

Money

Every passenger will pay you for your service! You get paid when the passenger is dropped off. NOTE: If you can drop off passengers quickly enough (make a drop-off within 30 seconds of the last, let's say) you'll get a money multiplier! We LOVE multiplying money!

Creepers

Colorful square/diamond things that patrol the map. If they see you, they will chase you! If they loose sight of you, they will keep moving to the last place they saw you. If they loose you completely, they return to patrolling.

If you collide with a Creeper... KABOOM! Try not to do this! You only have three lives.

Man, Hard to control with the keyboard. It takes some getting used to switching to reverse. I like the concept though. Great job! And it seemed to function pretty good.

Hey CoboltGames! Thank you very much for giving the game a try. I agree, the keyboard controls take some getting used to. Even for me, they confused me at times and I built the dang game, lol! If you’re even up for giving the game another go, give a try playing it with a gamepad. For me, gamepad felt more intuitive. Either way, thank you again! I appreciate you taking the time to play!
